Dr. Bini is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement and a leading voice in surgical technology. As Chief Technology Officer of the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, he works to bring operating-room robotics, machine learning, and sensor data into everyday clinical practice. His research spans artificial intelligence in orthopaedics, wearable-sensor gait analysis, and the prediction of patient outcomes from routine data, through collaborations that range from Google to surgical-device makers in Milan.

He trained in orthopaedic surgery at UCSF and completed fellowships at the Rizzoli Institute in Bologna and the University of Florence. Before returning to UCSF in 2014, he led orthopaedic surgery across several Kaiser Permanente medical centers. He founded DOCSF, the annual San Francisco conference where surgeons, engineers, and founders shape the digital future of musculoskeletal care, as well as the Personalized Arthroplasty Society, and serves as Associate Editor for Artificial Intelligence at the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

He runs the lab on the same principle that has guided his clinical and technical work: surgeons, students, and engineers contribute as equals, and trainees are given the responsibility to lead their own projects from first question to publication.
