The lab

Surgeons, medical students, engineers, data scientists, and visiting scholars work here as collaborators, not assistants. Members publish their own work, present it at national meetings, and mentor the people who follow.

SB

Professor Stefano A. Bini, MD

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR
MARIA MANETTI SHREM ENDOWED PROFESSOR
CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER, UCSF ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY

Dr. Bini is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement, and a leading figure in surgical technology. His career has centered on bringing operating-room robotics, machine learning, and sensor data into clinical practice, through collaborations spanning Google to Milan. He founded DOCSF, the annual San Francisco conference where surgeons, engineers, and founders shape the digital future of musculoskeletal care.

He oversees the lab on the same principle, encouraging surgeons, students, and engineers to work as equals and giving trainees the responsibility to lead their own projects.
